KST A to Z

Allergy – milk

Kai Haselmeyer HP

Göttingen, Germany

I wanted to share one of my first KST "wows" with you. I have a patient who has been suffering from a pretty severe lactose allergy for a few years. One little sip of milk was enough to cause diarrhea and create a lot of stomach pain (from gas).

I asked him to think about drinking milk and what happens to his body when he does so, and asked the OD for priorities.

After adjusting, I asked him how he felt. He said he had imagined swimming in a lake full of milk, taking a sip every few seconds.

He told me in the beginning it felt very uncomfortable, but as time went by he got more used to the thought and it didn’t bother him anymore. He thought this was because he got used to the thought.

Afterward, he was brave enough to give it a try, so we had a glass of nice full-fat milk together. Nothing happened, not then, not later during the day.

He has been drinking milk ever since (it’s been a month now) with no problems at all. He enjoys the taste.
