KST A to Z

Scoliosis, spina bifida

Marina Zare, DC

Portland, Oregon

The patient is an 18-year-old boy with a severe thoraco-lumbar scoliosis (43 degrees), spina bifida at C7-T1, muscle spasms on the right and rib hump on the left side.

His curve apparently happened quickly since his parent only recently noticed it. His MD took X-rays and told him to come back in 6 months and then have another set of X-rays. If his curve worsens, they would do surgery.

KST and some soft tissue work to loosen up the spastic muscles around his spine were performed. The next set of X-rays from his MD showed positive change in the curve, and he was told to come back in a year.

He had a lot of pain in his neck, upper back, and low back when we started, and now, unless he does something out of the ordinary, he is almost pain-free. I know that given his spinal condition, I would not be able to use any technique other than KST. It is safe and gentle. With KST, there is no one I won't touch.
