KST A to Z

Sleep paralysis

Chris Musacchio, DC

Harrisburg, North Carolina

She is a middle-aged female patient with the typical musculoskeletal complaints: headaches, neck pain, etc.

She was recently diagnosed with "sleep paralysis," has been waking up nightly out of a sound sleep, and was aware that she was awake but could not move. She couldn't call out to her husband for help; she would have to just lay there trapped in her body for several minutes before she could break out of it. It was causing so much duress; she was developing severe anxiety just going to bed knowing what awaited her.

After the sleep pattern was cleared, I checked further: structural? No. Emotional? Yes. Could I walk her through an episode? Yes.

As she walked through the experience verbally, I checked her OD and adjusted as things surfaced, mostly cranials.

She called the next morning in tears, saying that she had slept through the night for the first time in weeks. A few days later she called again saying she had had four trouble-free nights.
